Nigel Varley

I was a secondary school teacher for nearly 40 years. I taught History, ICT later in my career and was Resources Manager in a number of schools.
I have been an active trade unionist since 1970 serving as a lay officer in various capacities at branch level in the National Union of Teachers (now National Education Union). I was involved in representing individual members, negotiating with local authorities and school managements and organising industrial action and campaigns e.g. on school funding.
Upon retirement, I moved into a Bristol City Council supported block of flats for the over-60s. I was Chair of Gilton House Tenants’ Association and have taken part in the Council’s housing consultative groups. I have been particularly concerned with fire safety in tower blocks.
I am involved in wider political activity and campaigns. I have been able to travel widely since retirement although declining mobility now imposes limits.
