Over 55s Women’s Health Project
Bristol Older People’s Forum (BOPF) are working with Bristol Women’s Voice (BWV) on an over 55’s women’s health project.
The first older women’s space was held at the Bristol Women’s Voice (BWV) International Women’s Day 2023 celebration. It was motivated by feedback from older BWV members seeking more opportunities to connect and share their experiences and wisdom.
Attendees talked about some of the unique challenges (including invisibility) experienced by different generations of older women, and celebrated the benefits and emotional freedom that older age may offer.
Since then BOPF and BWV have co-hosted opportunities for older women to shape what a regular meetup might look like.
BWV was successful in applying for funding to run a 2-year funded project focused on over 55s women’s health, starting in summer 2025. BOPF is supporting this work as an advisor and through facilitation support.
The new project will challenge medical misogyny and the systemic barriers that affect older women’s health and wellbeing — barriers rooted in ageism, sexism, and intersecting forms of discrimination.
Together, we are hosting a series of participatory workshops, co-produced with local women, to create a truthful, up-to-date picture of health discrimination faced by women over 55.
