Promising practices in residential care homes: findings from the ‘Healthy Ageing in Residential Places (HARP) project”Care homes are widely regarded as the ‘last resort’ for older people and information about them is often dominated by scandals and reports of abuse. In this talk Liz Lloyd will present key findings from an international study. In this study, researchers from the UK, Canada, Sweden and Norway conducted research in each of their 4 four countries with the aim of identifying promising practices. In selected care homes, we conducted observations of daily routines as well as interviews with residents, relatives, staff, visiting staff and volunteers. We focused on what it is that makes care home a good place to live and to work – that is, what promotes the health and wellbeing of residents and staff. The findings highlight differences between the countries in terms of how care homes are run but also great similarities in what was considered to be beneficial.
